There are a few symptoms that'll tell you it may be time, and they're easy to spot. They range from a Check Engine warning on the dash, a mucky filter, and obvious wear to strange noises coming from the engine, worsening gas mileage, and black smoke in the exhaust. Bad smells in the cabin are also indicators.

Otherwise, when to replace air filters is straightforward. Do it every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, and no more than every 30,000 miles. That's approximately once a year. Check the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual for more info.
