Brakes
My Garage
There are two types of brake systems -- drum and disc. When your brake pedal is pressed, a brake piston (or pistons) travel a master brake cylinder's bore. This pressurizes brake fluid, sending it through brake hoses and lines.
In drum brakes, the fluid's movement forces brake shoes and brake drums to clamp together. In disc brakes, it causes brake rotors to clamp to brake calipers and brake pads. Friction results: your Acura vehicle, in this case, uses it to slow down and stop.
How long brake parts typically last depends on their condition. Either way, you use a brake long enough, and it'll end up worn out sooner or later. Luckily, there's an easy way to tell if yours needs changing -- look for the signs.
One is warnings lighting up the dash. Another is shuddering, drifting sideways, or grinding noises when braking. (Grinds indicate that your calipers may be contacting your rotors directly, likely because your pads have worn out.) Others yet include taking longer to slow and stop than you do normally, odd noises during braking, and an unusually low or soft-feeling brake pedal. Brakes that are less grippy than they used to be is also an indicator.
How you tell which parts need to be replaced is by doing a brake inspection. Check everything from the brake pedal, fluid, lines, and hoses to the brake assemblies and the parking brake. If the test results call for brake repairs, you can order what you need for them online, right here.
