Exhaust

Filter

The engine in your Acura creates noxious byproducts as it burns fuel. Exhaust systems help remove them. If your car or SUV didn't have one, poisonous fumes would make you and your passengers sick and pollute the environment, running afoul of emissions standards and laws.

An exhaust works a little like an air filter, or even an oil filter: it captures toxins. First, they go through a catalytic converter. Metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium trap them, splitting their molecules into oxygen, which flows onward, and nitrogen, which remains behind. Hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide burn up; meanwhile, a resonator and muffler help make sure air flows as well as it can. An exhaust manifold then sends the cleaner gases (mostly harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor) down an exhaust pipe. They reach the muffler's tail pipe, release into the air, and dissipate.

Unfortunately, exhausts aren't permanent. They can develop problems. Luckily, the signs of a bad one are easy to spot, well before exhaust failure. For instance, look for Check Engine and other warning lights on the dashboard and worsening fuel efficiency. Also, smell for a rotten-egg odor, and listen for unusual noises coming from the muffler and exhaust pipe.

How you tell which exhaust parts need changing depends on the results of an inspection. Otherwise, be sure to replace your catalytic converter every 100,000-mile interval and your muffler and/or resonator every 2-to-4-year interval. You can buy whatever you need for the project right here online.
